VÄLKOMMEN TO "WILD BULLTOFTAPARKEN" INITIATIVE!

JOIN OUR CROWDKNOWLEDGE CAMPAIGN AND HELP US DISCOVER WILD SPECIES OF BULLTOFTAPARKEN!

Hi! We are the Master students from Ukraine and Russia who study Urban Studies at Malmö University. We launched this web page as part of our university research project focused on building links between urban wildlife ecology & conversation and land use policies. We are study urban wildlife at Bulltoftaparken in Malmö to find out the practical implications of biodiversity programmes adopted by Malmö Stad. We are also curious to discover the roles of different stakeholders – farmers and land owners, policy makers, scientists and educators, who have their say in the process of urban expansion and creation of a new habitat for animals and people. Last but not least, we are looking at local communities who are the ones who actually engage into contact with wild animals through feeding, observations and various recreational activities.

FAQ

What is the aim of this website?

This website is aimed to showcase the variety of wildlife who reside in and around Bulltoftaparken in Malmö. Observing animal behavior in green and wooded areas always takes much time and enough luck, so inviting more attentive and curious eyes would be of a great benefit for the success of the initiative. We aim to create a collection of pictures of animal species which can be met in Bulltofta. We will also take this chance to pass around some knowledge about co-existence with wildlife in a city through small articles, quizzes and illustrations.

Why do we run this page in English?

Well, simply because our Swedish is not that good. However, we also hope that posting all information and instructions in English will allow us to get on board representatives of all 176 nationalities who currently reside in Malmö.

Why is public participation important for the initiative?

Crowdsourced knowledge is an excellent way to collect data and store thoughts and impressions of a great number of people, in the same time making the project ‘alive’. Asking for your involvement, we do not only get access to a rich variety of observations data, but also hope to give something in return, providing the community with a useful collection of information and evidence on biodiversity of Bulltoftaparken.

Great, so can I help?

Helping is easy – just scroll up this page and follow the instructions attached to observations maps, photo bank and quizzes. Thank you for your cooperation!

WHAT CAN I Do MORE?

YOU CAN MAKE YOUR OWN GARDEN MUCH MORE FRIENDLY FOR URBAN WILDLIFE

1) Trimmed lawns and gravel surfaces are very popular amongst many gardeners, but are they wildlife friendly? Unfortunately, they can’t provide natural habitat for most of the animals that can visit your garden. So be more courageous and make your lawns more diverse. You can try and experiment with just a section of your garden and change it into small meadow.

2) You can attract different species of insects by make real homes for them! One of the most popular way to do it is to make an insects hotel where small creatures can find a shelter.

3) Make a birdbox and place it in your garden where birds will be safe. Nothing is more sweet than seeing how birds feed their nestlings.

4) Make a small hole in your fence and clear path for hedgehogs. So these charismatic small animals will be able to visit your garden.

5) Feed birds during winter. Be aware that bread is unhealthy for them, so use special bird food or just black sunflower seeds. When started you need not to stop feeding through the whole winter as birds would get used to finding food in the same place. During summer you don’t need to feed them but bird bath will be more that appreciable.
